On the first night of Shavuot there is a tradition called Tikkun Layl Shavuot, the "repair on the night of Shavuot." People stay up through the night learning Torah in preparation for hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments in the morning service.
The tradition was originated by mystics who wondered how the people who had heard Divine revelation at Mt. Sinai could just 40 days later create an idol to worship. They concluded that the people must have woken up on the morning of the original revelation sleepy and without sufficient spiritual preparation. The "repair" would be to remain awake and learn.
We won't be staying up all night, but will sing together and study a few themes related to Torah and revelation for as long as people wish, after the brief evening service. There will be snacks! Come and stay for some or all the sessions. Teachers include Rabbi Jon and Charles Drutman.
