Temple Emanu-El, the synagogue in Haverhill, will be closing its doors at the end of
June, 2025. The temple, which stands at 514 Main Street, has been providing religious
and spiritual services to the Haverhill Jewish community for eighty-eight years, since its
inception in 1937. Across its history, Temple Emanu-El has participated in countless
religious, secular and historical events in Haverhill and the surrounding communities
including, among others, the creation of the Jewish State of Israel in 1948, the annual
birthday celebration of the Reverend Martin Luther King, the tragic events on 9/11, and
the attack and kidnapping in Israel on October 7, 2023.
To celebrate this bittersweet occasion, the Temple will be conducting various events on
the weekend of May 16 and 17. Friday evening, May 16, the temple will have an
outdoor cookout and potluck dinner at 6:00 pm followed by a Friday evening Shabbat
Service. On Saturday morning, May 17 at 9:30 am, the Temple will have its weekly
Saturday Shabbat morning service followed by a kiddush luncheon at noon.
Participation in the service is not required to attend the noon luncheon. Finally, Saturday
night, May 17, the Temple will host a Havdalah (Separation) service and celebration of
the 88 years, beginning at 6:30 pm. The evening will include people speaking of the
history of the congregation, as well as pictures and artifacts that show the importance of
the institution to the greater Haverhill community. All events will be held at Temple
Emanu-El, and are free of charge, however donations of either cash or dairy food will be
greatly appreciated. To RSVP or to donate to the festivities, please contact the Temple
office, at (978) 373-3861, by Monday, May 12, 2025.
