Tisha B'Av, the 9th day of the month of Av, is a traditional fast day mourning the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem and other catastrophes of Jewish history. The day also serves as the beginning of the lead up to the High Holy Days and serves as a time to begin reflecting on the "brokenness" of the past year and how we move hopefully toward the new one. We chant Aicha, the biblical book of Lamentations, which is a long poem presented as a first-person account of the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E.
